Written on the backdrop of his passion for the game of cricket it is clear how sport can be a tool of inspiration and strength to overcome even the toughest of situations.”

  • A wonderfully engaging, motivating and honest read! Despite his ongoing battles with chronic AS, Charlie’s passion for cricket and his desire to give everything he does his all, is inspiring. His story is truly relatable and gives perspective to managing our own goals and the challenges we may face along the way. It is a fantastic reminder that chasing your dreams is never plain sailing, but with a positive mindset, a competitive spirit and a never-give-up attitude, the journey will always be worth it.

  • A brilliant read for anyone who understands what playing sport but particularly cricket means to us middle aged men. Having played against Charlie and not knowing what he was going through at the time, I understand that determination he has always shown.

  • Charlie’s book is a powerful and inspiring read—for those with axial spondyloarthritis and beyond. As an amateur cricketer and clinician, I could relate to his struggles both on the field and in daily life. His honesty and resilience shine through every page, showing how mindset and support can make all the difference. Thank you, Charlie, for sharing your journey—this will inspire many to rise above their own challenges, just as you did.

  • A captivating and truly inspiring read! Having played with Charlie I had no clue what he was experiencing. I only saw the good and when we had played games and lost, it was never evident as to how truly disappointed he was and the extent of his pain. It is a true testimony to his character. He should be so proud of what he has created.

  • For anyone starting out on an AS journey, this book is very informative and helpful, an inspiration. It shows what can be achieved with not only the right medication but a positive attitude which Charlie has clearly shown. This really helps whilst living with the disease. As a fellow sufferer most of my adult life, I found Charlie's story uplifting. A very enjoyable read.

  • Charlie's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and refusing to give up on the game he loves. A great read throughout.

    Wes Landsdale

Professional Cricketer, Head of Cricket Rugby School & High Level Cricket Coach

  • This is an excellent read. A well written and absorbing book which brings to the fore Charlie's determination to get the very best out of life despite such a debilitating condition that would bring most people's sporting careers to an abrupt end. I have watched Charlie bat as an umpire from the "best seat in the house" and you would not believe in the way he plays that he has to overcome such physical pain with his lifetime condition. This is a memoir that sticks out and Charlie's mental and physical courage leaps off many pages. It has been a delight to share a cricket field with Charlie and also chat about the game over a pint afterwards. This is a book that will be enjoyed and admired by many.

  • The book matches your wonderful ability as an orator / storyteller with the serious side of the impact of AS. I only wish I'd fully understood your condition as a teammate and not just encouraged you to drink through a Saturday night! It's made me want to cherish every moment I'm able to have on a cricket field and work hard rather than just rocking up. Your story is an inspiring one and thank you for sharing it. Like for many young people at RCC, you've helped shape me into the adult I am today and - with everything that you've had to contend with - I am incredibly grateful.
